About Our Cause

Today, mental health problems are a leading impediment to academic success among college students. Many students suffer in silence, never getting the help they need. For most, this means missing out on academic and social opportunities. Others may be unable to fulfill their promise and dreams. For some, the suffering can have tragic consequences.

A recent study reveals a frightening reality: half of all college students have had suicidal thoughts. Tragically, suicide remains the second leading cause of death among college students.

At The Jed Foundation, we know suicide is a preventable problem and believe comprehensive approaches can save lives. Our goal is to help students become emotionally healthy before they reach the point of crisis. This requires:

  • Helping students make lifestyle changes that promote sounder mental health
  • Encouraging students to seek help when they need it
  • And ensuring our students are in safe, healthy campus communities able and committed to protecting their best interests

In the past, responsibility for student mental health rested solely on the shoulders of university counseling centers. Today, experts believe the right solution involves all stakeholders — the entire campus community, healthcare professionals, government, young people and their parents — in safeguarding student mental health.
